Weather vs Climate

Weather vs Climate

Climate is different than weather. Weather is what’s going on outside today. The 5-day forecast tells us about weather. Climate is the average weather over long periods of time. The graph above shows how the global temperature has changed over a 120 year period.

This change in average temperature over a long time period is climate change. Each line represents a year. The blue lines show that the average temperature that year was below the overall average for the 120 year period. The red lines show that the average temperature that year was above the overall average for the 120 year period. Since 1980 the average temperature for the year has been higher than the overall average and the overall average is getting hotter.
